For EN388: Impact resistance is pass/fail!
When looking gloves with an EN388:2016 safety rating or newer, the final value will be either P, F or X.
This indicates the glove’s impact resistance. This optional test has only three indicators:
P (pass), F (fail), and X (untested). Many older gloves are untested, but some are being tested so you’ll know if it’s rated for impact protection!

For ANSI/ISEA 138: Impact resistance comes in grades!
Need more assurance when it comes to impact resistance?
The
ANSI/ISEA138 standard has several grades that give you an idea of a glove’s impact resistance effectiveness.
For
ANSI/ISEA 138, the glove is tested by placing it on an anvil, while being subject to a striking force. The amount of force transferred through the glove will be recorded by a force gauge connected to the anvil.
ANSI/ISEA 138 grades for impact protection ranges from 1-3, with 3 being the
most protective.
And here’s why it matters!
While many workers are aware that cut protection is important for gloves, impact
protection is proving more and more important.
The risk of crushing forces can occur in many industries where glove PPE is
required, such as warehouses, logistics and oil rigs.
Just think about it: even in home storerooms, boxes crush the fingers of many
people daily. How much more in a work setting?
